5 Steps For a More Natural Smile While Posing for a Photo

We've got plenty of posts about what to do once you've taken a photo, but we've yet to discuss how to avoid inadvertently entering into the pantheon of awkward friends and family photos. I suspect many of you out there have the same problem I do: smiling on cue, especially in this age of Instagrams and digital cameras hiding in every bag, purse, and pocket. Here's how to naturally smile the next time someone pulls out their iPhone or Canon...

Jeff Wysaski of Pleated Jeans breaks down the posed smile for photos into a humrous 5 steps process:

  • Don't say "cheese", and say a word that end with the sound "uh" for a more natural smile.
  • Pretend to laugh while the photo is being taken (or better yet, genuinely laugh thinking about silly things like "how short corgi legs are").
  • Lift the front of your tongue behind the front of your teeth.
  • Relax your face.
  • Combine all steps.
And don't forget to brush up on our tips when you're on the other side of the camera, as shared by our Photo Magician, Leela:
