Alison's January Cure: My Third Week

Alison's January Cure: My Third Week

Cleanliness and peace. That's what I am looking for in a healthy, "cured" home. Peace is a goal for me. Which should have made Day 11 super easy, right? Just turn everything off. But no, I am sorry to say, it was really, really hard.

I hung my keys on a hook by the front door, cleaned the bedroom (just look at that lovely made bed!), went through the childrens' books, done, done, done! But… all week long I put off having a media fast. Which is crazy, because I know that having a fast from media is just what I need. Too much internet in our house means bad communication, bad behavior, and loads of mess. Mess that then gets avoided while we, again, spend too much time online or watching TV.

Back when I was a kid, one of my favorite things in the world was when we lost power. I know that sounds weird. But it meant my usual loud, TV-watching, video-gaming house was quiet and still, and I could read or write in my room in peace. Maybe even my mother would sit at the piano and play for us — the best, most special treat of all.

I want to offer these times of peace to my children too, and not just once a year, but throughout the year. How do you monitor media use in your house? Do you put the computer away for a period of time each day? Each month? Each year? Even if the outbox gets forgotten or that project never gets finished, this is one part of the cure I really think my family needs to see as permanent.
