Before & After: From Christmas Color Nightmare to Fresh Family Home

When I received the photos from a client in North Carolina of the house she and her husband were considering purchasing, I cringed. The kitchen looked like a mushroom-induced attempt on Christmas (I know, strange description. And it WAS that strange!). The full bathroom needed help, big time. The walls, trim and ceilings throughout all needed some serious rehab and freshening up with paint. It was criminal what previous owners or tenants had done to this cute little two-story brick gem in the heart of Duke territory in Durham.

When I visited for a walk-through and to take measurements, I realized that the layout was all wrong for a soon-to-be growing family. The bathroom needed a layout change and expansion. The dining area had to be reconfigured into a comfortable transition space leading to the bedrooms upstairs. And we needed to find a way to make the space feel less closed off and more open and light.

I quickly drew up four new floor plans to help explain the ideas I had that would give the couple multiple options when it came down to how they would use their new space. We determined that the two most important problems to be solved were making the bathroom more functional and open and creating a living space which flows nicely into the kitchen for ease of entertainment.

Once a plan was nailed down, we worked with the couple's contractor in order to make sure we could get what we wanted within budget. I couldn't be happier with the results!
