Best Kids Parties: Sweet, Girly Wonderland

I can't imagine Sarah was in a hurry to take down these lovely decorations. She shares: For Charlotte's first birthday, I wanted to use cheerful color and texture, girly ruffles, and lots of pattern to create a sweet, small wonderland.

I did Charlotte's invitation in calligraphy - an accordion-folded timeline of her first year. We made tissue paper pompoms and flag bunting banners made with oversized ric-rac to hang from the ceiling and windows, and I covered paper party hats in fabric for the kids. I set out candy jewelry and grouped tinted glass bottles and ceramic pitchers with pink carnations, yellow billy balls, and green berries on the table and around the living room.

We served toasted sandwiches, salad, and fruit skewers for lunch, but the star of the show was Charlotte's shell pink ruffle cake, complete with fondant flowers on top and "fairy glitter" around the sides. I was so lucky to have talented friends and family share their skill to make Charlotte's party so special. My great friend Laura Burton of Uprising Custom Cakes created the beautiful cake and a 4-inch smash cake for Charlotte; Elizabeth Jones of Sweet Thang made beautiful paper doll cookies for favors; and Laura Rowe of Laura Rowe Photography captured the whole soiree.

Thanks Sarah!
