Meet Luciana Misura of Colagem

Name: Luciana Misura
Location: Austin, TX
Web site: Colagem (means Collage in Portuguese)
Kid: Julia, 2 years old

Our third featured blog in Ohdeedoh's Big Blog Family series (last week we heard from Jill Green), comes from Luciana Misura in Austin, Texas. Mom of Julia, who lives in one of our favorite bright nurseries, Luciana has been blogging as an Brazilian expat since 2001...

With rich photos of her life and travels (and of course Julia's nursery, upcoming playroom, birthday party decor, and more), the blog truly is a collage of images and ideas. For those who don't speak Portuguese, here's what we're missing out on (and for those that do, Luciana lists some of her favorite Portuguese blogs below):

How long have you been blogging and why did you start?
I started blogging in 2001; I used to write journals growing up and when a couple of friends introduced me to blogging I was immediately hooked. It was useful for my family and friends to keep in touch too, because I lived several hundred miles away. When I moved from Brazil to the US in 2002, it became even more important – I wanted to write down all my new experiences as an expat, and my parents wanted photos so the blog was the perfect way of doing it.

Tell us about your blog, Colagem
I talk about my life as a Brazilian living in the US and the things I like – traveling and design are some of them; and after Julia was born, I started writing about raising a child in a different culture and kids' stuff in general. I usually have lots of pictures too, since that is one of the main reasons for the blog, and my mom makes a point of complaining when I go too long without publishing new pics ;-) .

Where do you go in the blogosphere for inspiration?
In English I read Design Mom, Dooce, Hostess with the Mostess (just used the fabulous rainbow cake I saw there for Julia's 2nd birthday party this past weekend!), Simply Recipes, Project Nursery, Coochicoos, Cool Mom Picks, A Little Sussy, Delicious Baby, Design Sponge and Now (for kids). In Portuguese I read a ton of blogs, but I can recommend Let's Vamos for its photography and design content, Chucrute com Salsicha, a great food blog, Viaje na Viagem, which is a lively travel blog and the best mommy blog of all was Mothern – it became a book, a TV series and a few different products for moms a few years ago (unfortunately they became too busy and stopped blogging).

What current design or family projects are you are working on?
I'm working on Julia's playroom right now, I know everything I need to buy/do at this point. It will have blue walls and ceiling and lots of stickers to create an outdoor backdrop. We need to paint but might end up waiting for the weather to cool a bit so we can turn off the AC and open the windows…(August is the hottest month in Austin, pretty much 100F every day!). I also just did Julia's 2nd birthday parties (a small one at home for friends and a bigger one for my husband's family out of state) – they turned out well but not exactly what I imagined just because of my lack of birthday party planning experience. Hopefully by the time Julia is 5 or so I can get it right!

How do you approach the decorating process?
It's funny because I had to learn how to think about decorating in the US – in Brazil the houses are built differently and even when you decide to paint is a big deal, so people rarely do it themselves. I love the whole DIY approach here! I usually choose the colors I'm going to use, based on what the room will be used for, who will use it and for how long I want this decoration to last. With that in mind I start looking for the main pieces of furniture and accessories. I go from website to website saving pictures of everything I see that might work and then try to make sense of it all – grouping things that go together and then imagining where they would go in the room, if they fit, if I could make something myself or find alternatives on Etsy...finally, ordering everything and putting the room together – it's always amazing to see what some color can do to a room!

Thanks, Luciana!

Since our inception, we have loved hearing from all of our readers as well as reaching out to several in the blog community. You are mothers, fathers, wives, husbands all writing about your families, style and what makes you tick. To continue fostering this great blogging community, we'll be featuring close-ups of our favorite family and design blogs as part of our "Big Blog Family".
