Is it possible to fall in love with a house without ever going inside? I've fallen hard for many houses in my time, some just from a momentary glimpse from a car window. My first was a little white cottage by a stream in my hometown that had a crisp red door. More recently, a glossy eggplant door on a brick townhouse had my heart aching. The common thread between all these love affairs? A colorful front door.

Have you painted your front door? It's a surprisingly manageable DIY project. Here's our three-step how-to that just might inspire you to Color Cure your front door.

If you're daunted by the prospect of painting your exterior, only to have weather scuff and dim your beautiful paint job, you're not alone. BEHR Paint actually formulated their MARQUEE Exterior Paint & Primer with those concerns in mind – the paint is designed to withstand more of what time and nature can throw at it.

1) Pick Your Color

Color is a personal choice, and is more about the feelings it evokes in you than anything else. BEHR MARQUEE Exterior has a ton of rich, saturated colors to choose from, so narrow it down by first thinking about what colors will best complement your home's facade. Then start looking within those color families.

BEHR's paint names help understand the unique character of each color. The owners of the home at the top of the post chose BEHR's Construction Zone to give their simple, industrial facade a playful and bold entrance. Above, BEHR's Caicos Turquoise offers a cheerful and unexpected welcome to an otherwise traditional house.

2) Fill and Sand

After removing the door from its frame, wash it and fix any cracks with wood filler. After it's dry, sand the whole door down with fine-grit sandpaper to get rid of excess wood filler and any leftover paint drips from the previous coat.

3) Prime and Paint

Chose a paint and primer that delivers exceptional dirt resistance and advanced fade protection. BEHR MARQUEE Exterior Paint & Primer delivers a tough, non-stick surface that helps resist dirt build up along with advanced UV protection and exceptional gloss protection for longer lasting, more lustrous color. The result of these two exceptional features is a paint color that stays looking great, long after the surface has been painted.
