When Jennifer's friend Karen asked for assistance redoing the bedroom shared by her two sons, Jennifer jumped at the chance to tackle a room for boys. Hoping to update the room while still reusing some existing elements, Jennifer designed a room with classic elements that can grow with the boys. One of the highlights of the room is the pair of upholstered headboards that Jennifer made herself.

The basic structure of the headboard is made of plywood and wood planks held together with 1 1/4 in wood screws — a simple enough base for any DIYer. Jennifer then cut to size and stapled 1 inch high density foam to the plywood center of the headboard. Because Karen chose a quilt rather than just fabric to cover the headboards, she did not have to use batting to cover the foam.

Jennifer cut the quilt to size before stapling it to the headboard base. It took a lot of careful folding, trimming, and stapling to create a picture-perfect headboard, including covering the legs of the headboard that peek out at the side of the bed.
