Fun & Easy (But Still Special) Birthday Traditions to Start This Year

Birthdays are magical. I mean, not so much when you're turning 30... but definitely when you're a kid–your birthday is the best day of the year. It's a whole day! All about you! And if you're lucky, you have parents who go out of their way to do something special for you every year.

Here are six fun birthday traditions you should kick off in the year ahead:

A Week-Long Birthday Countdown

Does anybody else out there claim an entire "birthday week" for themselves to extend your special treatment? Twenty-four hours is too short for such a momentous occasion! Turn a handful of match-style boxes and some little toys and trinkets into a birthday countdown with instructions and printables from Simple as That.

Birthday Balloon Surprise

Kick off the day with a simple prank for your kid's room. Sara Schmutz and Balloon Time show us how its done with crepe paper and a bunch of balloons.

Cake Batter Pancakes

Don't make 'em wait until night for birthday cake. This recipe from How Sweet Its Is is the perfect way to start every birthday from here on out.

Fairy Bread

This is a tradition borrowed from our friends down under. Fairy bread–aka sprinkles on bread–is a much-loved birthday treat in Australia. Read more about fairy bread and how to make it on The Kitchn:

The Birthday Plate

Whether it's cake, pancakes, fairy bread or just a sandwich, you can give the birthday boy or girl special treatment at every meal by busting out a special birthday plate just for the occasion (this one is from Zinnia Designs on Etsy). It's like fine china for the elementary school set.

The Birthday Shoe

This family tradition from So Festive is for anyone who wishes the tooth fairy came around more often: Kids leave out their favorite shoe the night before their birthday, then wake up the next morning to one quarter for every year old you are (plus an extra for good luck).
