Jumpstart Your New Year: 5 Gym-Free Workout Options to Try

It's that time of year again— time to burn off the overindulgences of the holidays and start the year off on a healthier foot. Instead of joining the masses at the local gym, we've rounded up a few options that will keep you going long into the new year and won't leave your wallet (much) slimmer.

For those who struggle to commit, group activities add an extra level of accountability and for those who would rather exercise in the privacy of their own home or are crunched for time, home based workouts may be your jam. Here are our top 5 gym alternatives.

1. Try an outdoors group workout. The November Project has outposts in a number of cities and the groups like to mix things up with fitness based "games" and themes for the sweat sessions. The early start isn't for the faint of heart but if a strong social component is what motivates you this might be a good fit. Even better? It's free.

2. Mix things up. Get bored easily? Fitmob and Fitpass give you access to a range of local classes and gyms, with offerings as diverse as the Circus Center and Barre. Fitmob comes in at $99 and Fitpass operates off of a buy-as-you-go points system.

3. Stay home. Streaming services like Daily Burn and My Yoga Works allow you to get your exercise without leaving the house—perfect for those who are less than fond of the gym itself, or need to squeeze workouts into a busy schedule. With My Yoga Works, you can search workouts by time making it easy to get them in whenever possible. Daily Burn offers a variety of classes so you can mix things up however you like. Both come in around $15 a month.

4. Join a running club. If you prefer to run but need a little extra motivation and enjoy making it a social affair, a run club might be a good fit. You can find a comprehensive list on Road Runners Club of America or check with your local fitness outfitter—many of them organize local meet-ups.

5. Find a community yoga class/studio. Yoga packs the ultimate punch when it comes to mind and body balance but studio memberships can be expensive. San Francisco and New York have Yoga to the People a strictly donation based network of studios but many other studios have a community night where pay what you can.
