Keith Haring's Journals on Tumblr

The Brooklyn Museum's new exhibit "Keith Haring: 1978-1982" is currently on display through July 8, 2012. It's a comprehensive look at Haring's early work and features several journals from his early twenties. The Keith Haring Foundation has scanned the journals included in the exhibit, and they've created a Tumblr blog where they'll post a new page every day for the duration of the show. It's a glimpse into the mind of one of the most popular and influential artists of the 80's, before he was famous.

While it feels a little funny to be privy to someone's diary, I find myself checking in every day to see more. The pages are graphic and fun (you can clearly see Haring's signature style evolving) but also simple and sweetly ordinary.

Some pages have intricate designs, while others are simply doodles, notes and lists. It's just like what I doodle on my grocery list, but about 1000 times more creative.

You can see what he was doing (Hunger Walk) and spending (35 cents deposited August 16) and thinking about. It gives a great deal of humanity to an artist who made such a huge splash during his very short life.
