Kimmy's DIY Hideaway Charging Station

Kimmy's DIY Hideaway Charging Station

Kimmy found a favourite electronics device charging station from Pottery Barn, the Smart Technology Recharge Station with Whiteboard. It's a handsome solution that hides away your tech while not in use. But the price wasn't as nice as Kimmy wanted, so she got down to making her own version...

The inspiration.

I found this lovely little 3 drawer chest at TJ Maxx for about $25.

Next, it was Rick's turn to shop for a good multi-plug extension cord. He had trouble finding a single cord that would allow all those big fat charger plugs to fit into it. So he got an extension cord plus two 3 outlet plugs. That gave us a total of 7 possible outlets.

Now for the power tools. Using a large diameter drill bit and a drill attachment that you use to drill a hole in a door for a deadbolt, he made holes through the back of the chest and into each drawer in the chest. (He slipped a little on that big hole, but it's on the back so you can't see it.)

We put the cord with the multi-plug outlets in the bottom drawer, and threaded all the charger cords out out through the back and into one of the upper 2 drawers. There's also room in that big bottom drawer for battery chargers and cameras. Our cell phones and that lovely screwdriver are in the drawers, and there's still room for an ipod or two.

Nice job, Kimmy! We're big proponents of hiding away tech items when not in use (because frankly, most of it isn't all that nice looking and it adds to visual clutter; our own desk is a bit of a tech mess right now, so we need to practice what we preach). Be sure to check out more photos of Kimmy's project over at her blog, Kimmy Does Denver.
