While on the road for Makeover America, Apartment Therapy Founder Maxwell Ryan took some time to chat with Zandra and Karen of Little Yellow Couch. On their Style Matters podcast, he talks about the benefit of copying to learn, the "why not" moment when he realized he could renovate a former rental instead of moving, and how nothing you do for your home is ever wasted.

Here's Maxwell on design therapy vs. surgery:

There are two ways you can go about creating a change. You can either be a therapist, where you're helping someone initiate change for themselves— in other words, you're enlightening them as to what they could do and when they make the change, it's their change... they own it and they're the victor. It's a long road and not everyone wants to do that. The other approach is surgery. You go to the hospital, you might see your surgeon, you sign some papers, they knock you out and you wake up on the other end. With interiors, we at Apartment Therapy don't perform surgery.
