Out of the Frame: 5 Unique Ways to Display Art

If you have a particularly special piece and framing just won't cut it, or you're too cheap to pay for a giant frame, or you're just looking for something different, we've got your number. Here are five out-of-the-box ways to hang your art.

Highland Hardware makes kits for creating frames that seem to float above the wall. Above is an example of the technique at work from Hunted Interior.

Here's a detail and another example of the frame in action, from House of Jade. These look especially nice in front of painted or wallpapered walls.

Joni from Lay Baby Lay framed this poster with furring strips.

Pant hangers make an elegant way to display smaller pieces, as seen on Scandinavian Deko.

Ok, so this piece is still in a frame, but the (really really) oversized mat gives it an entirely new aspect. Image from Style at Home.

And finally, the most affordable idea of all: use binder clips (hung on small nails sunk in the wall) to hang posters and prints. In this bedroom from Front + Main, gold binder clips add a touch of glam.
