Rea's Sliding and Floating Mini PC Desk

Floating desks have long been our go-to recommendation for anyone looking to fit a workspace where regular sized desks have no business treading. Some floating desk setups are expansive, but others like this sliding drawer IKEA+Dell Inspiron Zino HD system cram in as much utility within the equivalent space of a typical desk drawer...

The original IKEA Ludvig was designed to lean against the wall, but hacked, it can be set up as a floating workspace.

Inspired by an iMac-computer-desk from several years back, blogger Rea found himself dreaming of creating an all-in-one setup in similar fashion for his compact Dell Mini PC. The problem? The IKEA Ludvig laptop shelf and charging station was no longer available. He was eventually able to hunt one down via eBay and got started on making his dream come true:

"...I fixed the shelf to the wall using hidden brackets/anchors to increase the weight supported by the shelf itself. Last, I switched the original black-compartment, the one below the sliding shelf, with an handicraft one. Made by a zinc-coated metal sheet (1mm thick) with different holes on the floor and sides (for cables, weight and ventilation reasons). The rest is your normal wall-mounted monitor, wireless keyboard set and mini-pc. A Dell Inspiron Zino HD with its keyboard set."

The final setup is compact, minimalist, and clutter-free workstation which could easily be altered in height as a standing desk setup. If drilling into the wall is an option, hiring an electrician to route the cables and wires from the monitor out of sight could be an upgrade, but Rea's all-white walls and a cable routing cord cover does the trick nearly as effectively.

Rea also offers several tips when setting up a small all-in-one setup, most importantly planning for cutouts for wires/cables alongside ventilation well before the mounting process, alongside using short length cables, since hiding them within an enclosed space is made easier at shorter lengths.

Maybe you're now inspired to install a hallway or bedroom floating desk (I know I am). Here are a few additional resources with the challenges of a small desk in mind:
