Modern Rustic Bedrooms

In the middle of a shaky economy, the modern rustic style seems to be picking up speed. Natural materials, simple forms, and a back-to-basics aesthetic provide a welcome sense of timelessness. For this post, we've taken the word "rustic" quite literally, looking at bedrooms that have a direct connection with the outdoors...

These bedrooms are drawn from a range of indoor/outdoor spaces: a canvas tent, a sleeping porch, a window-lined country home, and a barn conversion in England. The thread that ties them together is an emphasis on sunlight, a variety of natural textures, and views to the landscape. To get a similar look at home, stick with basic cotton bedding and minimal window treatments, such as sheer curtains or a Roman shade. A neutral palette makes a good backdrop for this style; bring in color with blankets and textiles.
