Store History

The word for "coaster" in German is "Bierfilzl," literally, "beer felt." I learned this and other fun felt facts while perusing Gräf & Lantz. Besides giving me a history lesson, the store also features well-designed home and office products made of this fascinating fabric.

Because felt is made of matted fibers instead of woven, it's likely the world's oldest fabric. Felt is mentioned in ancient texts, and found artifacts date back to 700 BC. That is a lot of history to live up to for some laptop cases and wine carriers, but founders Holger & Daniel seem up to the challenge. With such a long lineage, felt is not fussy, and neither are Gräf & Lantz's designs. With understated iPad sleeves and simple stitched bowls, it's about the quality. Although many felts today are made with synthetics, Gräf & Lantz uses 100% merino wool felt imported from Germany. Now, das ist gut.
