Sustainable Plastic Production, by Bacteria

Researchers have inserted a gene into a bacteria that turns it into a carbon dioxide-eating, ethylene-producing machine. Plastics are manufactured using ethylene, most of which is derived from fossil fuels. Now, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory says six tons of CO2 emissions are saved per ton of ethylene produced by the bacteria; three tons are absorbed by the bacteria and three are avoided from the usual fossil fuels.
