A Mountain of Sound: Wow & Flutter Speaker System

Over the summer I met Los Angeles designer, Tracy Wilkinson at a friend's house, where a group of us talked design and the state of design media. Tracy is already well known for her handmade ceramics; she's recently announced her latest endeavor, partnering with another Angeleno creative hand, Simon Storey, to launch store.LA, a small catalog of household objects, big and small, including this magnificently unique audio piece reflecting Storey's architectural DNA...

Designer, Simon Storey shares:

"The initial idea for this loudspeaker came from a visit to a very large thrift store a few neighborhoods away. At this place there are always stacks of old stereo equipment and loudspeakers piled on top of each other.

The idea was to create and single loudspeader composed of individual parts that can be broken up and dispersed as necessary - aimed in different directions, moved to other rooms or other parts of the same room.

The shape is reminiscent of a mountain - a mountain of old speakers, just like from the initial visit to the thrift store.

The choice of wood for the finish pays tribute to the
bygone practice of making instruments and loudspeakers from wood because of it's natural acoustic properties."

Although the Wow & Flutter speaker system is designed to be arranged to the user's creative content, Storey notes the mahogany veneer speakers are designed to be 3-way, with distinct left and right set of speakers. But there's no doubt, half the appeal of owning a set of these audio components is the option to playing building blocks and creating your own Wall of Sound. Ordering information available here.
